Principal's News - Mr. O'Leary

Welcome to Week 5 – Halfway Through Term 2!
As we reach the midpoint of Term 2, there's a great sense of momentum and purpose across the school. Our classrooms are alive with learning as students engage in assessment tasks, consolidate their skills, and prepare for the upcoming Semester 1 reporting period. Teachers are working collaboratively in their grade teams to ensure thoughtful, comprehensive reports that reflect each child’s progress and growth.

Good Luck to Our Paul Kelly Cup Girls Team!
We send our very best wishes to our AFL Paul Kelly Cup girls team as they represent our school today in Orange for the Regional Final. These students have shown outstanding commitment, sportsmanship, and teamwork in their preparation — we are incredibly proud of them. Go team SJP!

Celebrating Mass as a Community
A heartfelt thank you to all families who joined us yesterday for our school and parish Mass at St Brigid’s Church. It is always a special occasion when our school and parish come together in faith, celebration, and community. Your presence truly enhances the spiritual life of our school.

Kindergarten 2026 – Enrolment Interviews Begin
This week marks the beginning of our Kindergarten 2026 enrolment interviews, starting with families who already have children at our school. It is always a joy to meet with parents and welcome the next generation of learners to our SJP family.

We are still accepting enrolment applications for Kindergarten 2026, as well as limited places in some other year levels. If you know of a family who may be interested in joining our wonderful school, please encourage them to contact the front office to collect an enrolment pack or arrange a school tour.

National Reconciliation Week – Diocesan Aboriginal Mass
This Friday, May 30, our school has the honour of participating in a very special event as part of National Reconciliation Week. St John’s Primary has been invited to join several schools from across our region to fill St Brigid’s Church for the first annual Diocesan Aboriginal Mass — a deeply meaningful celebration approved by Bishop Michael McKenna.

Beginning in 2025, the Diocese of Bathurst will host two dedicated Aboriginal Masses each year, recognising significant dates in the journey of truth, justice, and healing for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. We are proud that St Brigid’s Church in Dubbo has been chosen to host the inaugural Reconciliation Week Mass.

To mark the occasion, our Year 6 students, as school leaders, and our Aboriginal students from across the school will represent St John’s Primary at the Mass. This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to take part in a faith-filled and culturally significant event, and to stand in solidarity as young people committed to reconciliation and respectful relationships.

We thank the Diocese and our Parish for including us in this important gathering, and we look forward to sharing photos and reflections with our wider school community next week.

The following information is shared for us by Reconciliation Australia:
‘The dates for NRW remain the same each year; 27 May to 3 June. These dates commemorate two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey – the successful 1967 referendum, and the High Court Mabo decision respectively.

Reconciliation must live in the hearts, minds and actions of all Australians as we move forward, creating a nation strengthened by respectful relationships between the wider Australian community, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

The National Reconciliation Week (NRW) 2025 theme, Bridging Now to Next, reflects the ongoing connection between past, present and future.

Bridging Now to Next calls on all Australians to step forward together, to look ahead and continue the push forward as past lessons guide us.

In the #NRW2025 theme artwork created by Kalkadoon woman Bree Buttenshaw, native plants − which are known for regenerating after fire and thriving through adversity − symbolise our collective strength and the possibilities of renewal. This is a time for growth, reflection, and commitment to walking together.

Australia’s history of reconciliation is not a linear one, we have made great strides and experienced disappointing setbacks.

Twenty-five years ago, Corroboree 2000 brought together Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and non-Indigenous leaders in a historic call for reconciliation. We continue that work in 2025, inviting all Australians to join us in Bridging Now to Next – building a more united and respectful nation.’

Embedding Indigenous Perspectives in the Curriculum
Last week, all of our staff had the valuable opportunity to work with Bonnie Cochrane from TIPIAC (Teaching Indigenous Perspectives Across the Curriculum) as part of our ongoing professional learning in cultural understanding and curriculum development.

Bonnie is a passionate educator and during her mentoring sessions with our teachers, the focus was on embedding authentic Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives within History and Geography units across all year levels.

Staff explored practical strategies for integrating local stories, voices, and perspectives into the curriculum, while also deepening their understanding of cultural protocols and the importance of culturally responsive teaching. These sessions supported our staff in planning inclusive and meaningful learning experiences that align with both the Australian Curriculum and the goals of National Reconciliation Week.

This work reflects our school's deep commitment to reconciliation and building a culturally safe and respectful learning environment for all students.

Professional Learning in Mathematics with Anita Chin
This week, our teaching staff will continue their professional learning journey with renowned Mathematics educator, Anita Chin. As a nationally recognised Mathematics coach and mentor, Anita brings a wealth of knowledge, passion, and practical expertise in embedding high-impact numeracy strategies across all stages of learning.

Through a combination of hands-on workshops, team planning sessions, and in-class demonstrations, our staff are engaging in meaningful dialogue around best practice in mathematics instruction. This partnership is helping to build consistency in language, deepen our understanding of the NSW Mathematics syllabus, and strengthen our focus on reasoning, problem-solving, and conceptual understanding in every classroom.

Our ongoing collaboration with Anita reflects our school’s commitment to evidence-based teaching, professional growth, and raising outcomes for all learners. We look forward to sharing some of the exciting shifts in classroom practice that are already taking shape!

Coming up
Musical News - Tickets for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory will be available very soon via 123Tix. There will be 2 days of performances. These are:

  • Monday 28th of July
  • Tuesday 29th of July

The main cast held their first Sunday practise yesterday and I can say - they are going to put on an amazing show, alongside each class in the entire school.

Attendance Report for Week 4 Term 2
As a school we continue to make overall progress on our 95% target for attendance. Some of our grades have slipped below 90%.

The Dubbo show is this weekend or Friday afternoon after school. Please note that any student away this Friday attending the Dubbo show will be marked as an unjustified absence. We continue to thank our parents for supporting the school in making every day count.

School Lockdown Procedure – Upcoming Practice Drills
As part of our ongoing commitment to student safety and wellbeing, we have recently developed a Lockdown Procedure to complement our existing Evacuation Plans. These new procedures outline how we will safely respond in the unlikely event of a situation requiring students and staff to remain indoors. The plan includes detailed processes for both class time and play time scenarios.

To support student understanding and preparedness, we will be holding two planned lockdown drills:

  • Tuesday, June 10 – Class Time Drill:
The scenario will involve an animal on the school grounds, with a patrol required to attend and safely remove it. This allows students to practise staying inside calmly and following teacher instructions.
  • Thursday, June 26 – Playground Drill:
In this drill, students will be guided through the process of moving from the playground to a designated indoor safety space, simulating a situation that requires shelter during break time

Our staff will introduce and discuss these procedures with students in an age-appropriate and reassuring way, ensuring they feel confident and informed. These safety drills will be framed as part of our broader learning about personal safety, just like our regular fire evacuation drills or lessons on road safety and water safety.

We appreciate your continued support in helping us create a safe, well-prepared, and informed school community.

Gospel and Reflection: John 14:23-29
23 Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them. 24 Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.

25 “All this I have spoken while still with you. 26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

28 “You heard me say, ‘I am going away and I am coming back to you.’ If you loved me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I. 29 I have told you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe.

Jesus promises his disciples that the Father will send the Advocate, the Holy Spirit.

Family Connection – Preparing with Faith and Trust
Parents are constantly guiding their children through moments of preparation—whether it's getting ready for a school day, studying for an important exam, anticipating a family holiday, or navigating more emotional milestones like a first day of school, a hospital visit, or even the loss of a loved one. These shared moments of preparation help shape our resilience, deepen our relationships, and remind us of the strength we gain from facing life’s journeys together.

In this Sunday’s Gospel, John 14:23–29, Jesus speaks tenderly to His disciples as He prepares them for what lies ahead: His Passion, Death, and Resurrection. With love and wisdom, He promises the gift of the Holy Spirit, offers them the peace of His presence, and gently tells them not to be afraid or troubled. His words are both a reassurance and an invitation to trust in something greater than fear—His enduring love.

As a family, take time this week to reflect on the moments you've prepared for together—from the joyful to the challenging. What did you learn from those experiences? How did you support one another? Why is preparation important?

Then, read aloud John 14:23–29 together. Talk about how Jesus prepared His disciples not just for His departure, but for the hope that would follow. Help your children see that faithful preparation—rooted in trust, peace, and love—can help us face anything that comes our way.

Let this be a reminder that God walks with us through every season of preparation, offering peace that the world cannot give, and strength that comes through believing.

God Bless and have a wonderful week

Anthony O’Leary

The Sacrament of Confirmation
Over the weekend the last of the enrolment Masses for the Sacrament of Confirmation for Catholic students in Year 6 were held.

We trust that parents understand that the Sacraments are at the heart of our Catholic faith. The Sacrament of Confirmation is a milestone in your child’s spiritual journey, and provides him/her with the strength to navigate life’s challenges while remaining grounded in Christ.

Parents if you missed the opportunity to attend an enrolment Mass over the weekend, please contact Sacramental Coordinator Rosalie Hosking asap, on: sacraments.dubbo@cdob.org.au to ensure your child does not miss out on the opportunity to prepare for, and receive the sacrament.

Meeting 4 Mass
A huge thankyou to the families who attended Mass with teachers over the weekend, and particularly to those students who were willing to participate in the Offertory Procession or read a Prayer of the Faithful.

As teachers, we often hear uplifting and heartfelt feedback from students after they have had the opportunity to participate more fully in the Mass. Their reflections demonstrate how much they value the chance to engage with their faith in a meaningful way. We trust that the experience was enriching for all who attended, and we thank you for joining us in this special celebration of faith.

National Reconciliation Mass
This Friday our Year 6 and Kindergarten-Year 5 Aboriginal students will attend a Diocesan Reconciliation Mass at St. Brigid’s Church. The Mass is held during National Reconciliation Week and acknowledges the history of our First Nations people and displays the commitment towards reconciliation. It is an opportunity for prayer, reflection, and action, and demonstrates a desire to work and live together in a more  harmonious country.

Reminder to Parents: SPB4L Fortnightly Focus – Leaving School Safely
This fortnight, our SPB4L (School-Wide Positive Behaviour for Learning) focus continues to be on Leaving School Safely. We’re encouraging all students to take responsibility for their safety and that of others as they leave school each day.

We’re pleased to share that we’ve seen a noticeable improvement in the way students are leaving school—it’s been amazing to see such positive changes!

To keep building on this success, we kindly ask that you continue to reinforce the following expectations at home:

  • Students should walk sensibly from their classroom with their teacher at the end of the day
  • Stay focused and avoid distractions
  • Head directly to their designated pick-up location—whether that’s the pick-up bay, bus bay, or another spot you’ve arranged

By following these simple steps, students are helping to create a smooth, calm, and safe end to the school day for everyone.

Thank you for your ongoing support in helping reinforce these important habits. Together, we’re making a real difference!

Social News - Mrs. Mills

This year, our school is proudly raising funds and awareness for the Mark Hughes Foundation Beanie for Brain Cancer campaign — a cause that holds special meaning for many of us. The date for our Beanie for Brain Cancer Day will be Friday 27th of June - this coincides with the NRL Beanie For Brain Cancer Round.

On this day students can wear a beanie and/or their favourite NRL Jersey to School. Students wearing a beanie or NRL Jersey are asked to make a gold coin donation. This money will then go onto the SJP Dubbo Fundraising page on the Mark Hughes Foundation Website.

Families from the St John’s Community are welcome to purchase a Mark Hughes Foundation Beanie for $29. Information regarding the purchasing of beanies will be sent out on Compass.

Here is why we are doing the fundraising:

Brain cancer is one of the most devastating forms of cancer. It does not discriminate. It can affect anyone — young or old — and all too often, it hits close to home. Sadly, some members of our own school and local community have been impacted by brain tumours. They are our friends, our neighbours, our family.

That’s why we’re wearing our beanies and donating what we can — to support critical research through the Mark Hughes Foundation, which is working tirelessly to improve treatment options, fund research, and ultimately, find a cure.
